So what are my needs? I’m a Linux user, so while Windows-only software is worth talking about in the comments for other people it’s less useful for me unless it’s easy to run under WINE. I thus need to pick a CAD package, learn it, and set to work. If I am to perfect my design for a slightly ridiculous contraption that will clean up on the track, it makes sense that I crowd my hackerspace with little 3D-printed scale models before breaking out the welding equipment and hacking a frame together with 25mm OD square tube. Hacky Racers in action ( Mark Mellors)Īll this has however recently changed, for as regular readers may have noticed I have a bit of a thing for the British Hacky Racer series. Reaching for the trusty pencil has always been the easiest option. My need for it has been too infrequent to either take the time to scale the learning curve or for my new-found knowledge to stick. I’m not averse to CAD and my holding out with paper is only due to familiarity, but I have to admit that I have never found a package to which I have successfully made the jump. But it is of course completely useless when applied to any computer-driven manufacturing such as a 3D printer, and for that I will need a CAD package. It’s quick and simple, and the skills are intuitive and long-held. Working on paper is fine for the situations in which I tend to use it, running bits of wood or sheet metal through a bandsaw or pillar drill, leaning on the sheet metal folder, and filing intricate parts to shape by hand. Well, maybe I lied a little there, the graph paper only comes in when I’m doing something very fancy the back of an envelope is fine as long as the dimensions on the diagram are correct. If I’m making something then by far the quickest way for me to visualise its design is to draw it, first a freehand sketch to get a feel of how everything will sit, then a series of isometric component drawings on graph paper with careful attention to dimensions and angles. PAD, you ask? OK, it’s an acronym of my own coinage, it stands for Pencil Aided Design, and it refers to the first-year undergraduate course I sat many years ago in which I learned technical drawing to the old British standard BS308. Don’t build this, it’s fundamentally flawed! Sometimes the front of an envelope is as effective as its back. It has helped me work on electronic projects, on furniture, on car parts, robots, and even garments, and it is likely that I will continue using it periodically for the rest of my career. ![]() Of all the skills that I have picked up over the years as an engineer, there is one that has stayed with me and been a constant over the last three decades. ![]() Instagram user on the other hand, actually got the blue-colored soda from the fountain drink machine at Kum & Go. In partnership with the PepsiCo Design Center I illustrated and designed the key visual supporting the launch of Mtn Dew Atomic Blue, an electric lemonade. Unfortunately, the Sheetz location with the sign didn’t have the flavor at that moment. The proof of its discontinuation can be found here. And that leads us to the big question: where can we get it? Reddit user u/trugay found a sign saying that the new flavor is already available at Sheetz stores in their fizz machines. Thin Ice Freeze was a Mountain Dew Freeze/Slurpee Flavor exclusively available 7-Eleven gas stations in Slurpee machines that were released in 2009 and later released throughout other convenience stores in the United States. Well, it appears that the new Atomic Blue Flavor has officially rolled out. Since the new soda features an azure color, we’re presuming that it’s a blue lemonade soda. Its tagline is 'DEW with a blast of Citrus Punch & Other Natural Flavors.' In October 2021, PepsiCo conducted a test phase. Sweet Lightning is a Sweet Peach & Smooth Honey flavor of Mountain Dew and has a yellow-orange look, partly having a comparable peach tasting flavor and color to that of Happy Dew Year. I think youve just gotta find one that has the right mixture. Sweet Lightning is a Franchise Exclusive Mountain Dew flavor available since April 2019 only at KFC restaurants. The second time, it was a sour lemonade dew with blue raspberry flavoring, which was a lot better. Overdrive is a Citrus Punch (Raspberry-Lime-Mango) flavor of Mountain Dew and has a red-orange look, having a similar punch tasting flavor to that of Sasquench. I think the syrup with this one is really finnicky the first time I had it, it tasted like a melted blue raspberry slushie with some hints of lemonade mixed in. PepsiCo describes the Atomic Blue Flavor as a MTN Dew with electrifying lemonade flavor. Overdrive is a Franchise Exclusive Mountain Dew flavor available since June 2022 only at Casey's General stores. Every item under this category is exclusively available at participating stores as a fountain drink. the game and now all the liches are covered in Mt. These flat panel aerials can sometimes be mounted on walls or hidden away – some even double up as picture frames. We find that loops generally have good sensitivity but don't always get every available channel. Usually consisting of a circular loop, this design doesn't require any specific horizontal or vertical angling and so will work with both types of transmitter. The design of log periodics means they can usually be adjusted vertically or horizontally with ease. They usually have a fan-shaped Perspex panel and the aerial elements are etched onto the panel. These models look the most like typical roof-top aerials. They can be omnidirectional, but you'll also find ones that shift from horizontal to vertical polarisation. These look a bit like car radio antennas. That way you'll know what type of polarisation you'll need. The majority of transmitters in the UK are horizontally polarised, but the best thing to do is take a look at the rooftop aerials in your neighbourhood to see how they're aligned. This is often just a simple process of rotating the aerial. Some aerials are 'omnidirectional', meaning they don't need to be angled, but most will need to be polarised either horizontally or vertically. If you don't do this, you could still see a fuzzy, distorted picture. Indoor aerials come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but the key thing to consider is how you'll need to angle or 'polarise' yours to match the local transmitter that's beaming the Freeview TV signal to your home. You may live in a block of flats without aerial access, or maybe you're already using the aerial connection for another television in your home. The best TV signal will always be achieved with a rooftop aerial but that's not always an option. However, even after the completion of the digital TV switchover boosted Freeview coverage in the UK to 98.5%, some people still struggle to get good reception in their home. While you may be able to use pliers to pull out a failed electric antenna, doing so may strip the gears or damage the motor. How could an indoor aerial help you get better TV reception?Īll new TVs have a Freeview and Freeview HD tuner, meaning you can watch a wide range of SD (standard definition) and HD (high definition) television channels without needing a subscription or additional equipment - apart from an aerial of course. And since a lot of these antennas are outside your normal field of vision, you may not even notice that the motor is broken unless you specifically go looking for it. It’s especially common for car wash attendants to push these in to keep them from breaking off in the wash, and if someone doesn’t remember to pull it back out on the other side, it’s pretty easy to just drive away none the wiser.Įlectric antennas that extend when the radio is turned on can also fail in the down position, in which case your radio reception will probably be pretty bad. ![]() Since there isn’t any mechanism to prevent these masts from being retracted, anyone can walk by and shove your antenna down. This may sound like extremely basic stuff, but it’s actually surprisingly common for manual antennas to be retracted and then left that way. Pulling it back out, if you find it shoved in, may be all it takes to vastly improve your reception. Since antennas function by picking up radio waves, it only stands to reason that being shoved down inside the car might make it difficult for your antenna to function correctly. ![]() Whatever the case, if you have a retractable mast and your reception has been awful lately it's definitely worth checking this first. There are a lot of ways that a manual antenna mast can end up pushed in, like if a car wash attendant forgot to pull it back out, or maybe a large bird decided to perch on it. ![]() To add incremental backups would need date checking and/or file hashes, comparing to find new/changed/deleted files, and only copying the appropriate files, but that tends to explode the complexity of the process. If I were to try it myself, I'd probably write a short BASH script to mount an EncFS folder online, copy backup files to it, and unmount when it was done syncing. A web search would probably find some programs that have automated encrypted cloud backups, if you trust the companies / cloud storage, but the point of DIY encryption is usually so you will be the only person in the who has the key. ![]() I'm not sure about a fully automated solution to backup scattered folders, encrypt and upload and delete the originals all at once, that wasn't part of the question when I originally answered. To restore (or view) the backup, we need access to the encryption options in plaintext, which has to be passed to encfs with the environment variable ENCFS6_CONFIG (we use a different directory in order not to mess up the existing ~/mythesis): $ ENCFS6_CONFIG=~/mythesis/.encfs6.xml ~/mnt/usbstick/thesisbackup ~/restoremythesis They will vanish once it is unmounted (no, this is not due to usage of the /tmp mountpoint).įor the second reason, now is the time to copy the encrypted files to the desired backup location, before unmounting the temporary encfs directory again: $ cp -R /tmp/thesisbackup/* /mnt/usbstick/ Secondly, the files in /tmp/thesisbackup are not persistent. Using the -reverse option has two effects: Firstly, the configuration file is now stored in the plaintext directory and /tmp/thesisbackup only contains it in encrypted form. Note the directory order is reversed to normal usage in this case. The following example assumes you want to create an encrypted backup of an existing plaintext directory ~/mythesis which contains the file thesis.txt.įirst, we create the encrypted backup of the existing plaintext directory: $ encfs -reverse ~/mythesis /tmp/thesisbackup Here's some pasted info: Backup plaintext directory Then the "virtual" encrypted files can be sent to the cloud (or any backup location) and you just need the encrypted options file (encfs6.xml, keeping it with the backup files would work) and passphrase to read them. Here's the best backup feature of EncFS (IMO) - it can do a " -reverse" mount, using a plain folder to create a "virtual" encrypted copy, without writing a single byte to your hard drive. Linux-oriented, but if the EncFS port for windows works it should be useable too. Super ArchWiki EncFS page - very good info on using EncFS. encfs4win - "experimental project of porting encfs to the Windows world".How-To Geek on How to Encrypt Cloud Storage on Linux and Windows with EncFS.The local files can remain un-encrypted, while the online copy/folder would be encrypted.ĭeleting the local files is an option ( after verifying the online copies can be decrypted), but for a good backup strategy you should keep a local copy somewhere/somehow just in case the online copy has problems, or the passphrase is lost, etc. ![]() Or, you could use an encrypted filesystem like EncFS to encrypt a local folder into a shared OneDrive (or other service) folder. Or, you could use a tool like TrueCrypt (though it's no longer officially supported) or dm-crypt/LUKS to create a big encrypted container file, put your files inside it, and copy the whole container to wherever. Then copy the encrypted files to wherever for backups. Sure, you could use PGP/ GPG to encrypt the files, either using your own personal public key (then you only remember your personal key's passphrase) or using -c conventional encryption only with a passphrase for the file you have to remember. ![]() Not to mention the SB team kills, but that's a different field. Unlike a lot of the game's community, we went into Subnautica totally blind and without any idea of what we had to do, and it seems to us as if Unknown Worlds may have forgotten the fact that a lot of players might be in the same boat as us (pun intended). PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Hello Neighbor are two very recent example of this, and now we have Unknown Worlds' Subnautica as well, a game that was released in early access at the back end of 2014 but has only just now surfaced as a finished product for us to quite literally dive into. In this era of gaming, Early Access games are incredibly common, meaning that before a title has even fully launched it may have already had years of developing an active community, showing its hand before getting everything to a level of polish and quality that the developers are happy to release to the world as a final product. ![]() In the below code, it will run the code in the try block.
